Portsmouth FC Academy campaign successfully raised £270,000
This campaign was successfully funded, raising £270,000 by 23:59 on August 15 to become the largest football crowdfunding project in the UK. Thank you!
Portsmouth FC has never owned its own training ground inside Portsmouth city, and now we have a chance to build a permanent home for the club's first team and the academy.
The city of Portsmouth has two major sources of pride as the home of the Royal Navy and Portsmouth FC. Football in Portsmouth is regarded as more than just a game.
Our club is unique in English football – and you only have to meet the characters who make up this wonderful club to see that.
It’s an integral part of our community. The support the team receives through thick and thin is spellbinding. Football luminaries including Sir Alex Ferguson, Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho have publicly stated their admiration for the amazing atmosphere they experienced at Fratton Park.
I’m Andy Awford, former player and now the manager of Pompey and this is my campaign to ensure that the future players of this wondeful club have a permanent place to train in the heart of the community beside the first team.
I’ve been part of Portsmouth FC, in one way or another, since 1989 and have shared in some amazing times with the fans and community alike. But nothing compares to the madness we’ve experienced over the last 6 years.
From winning the FA Cup and finishing 8th in the Premier League in 2008 to being relegated to League 2 and facing the threat of extinction, it seemed to go from bad to worse and when it comes to football supporters, just recently you’ve suffered more than most!
Together, as a club and a community we overcame these threats – and none more so than when fans came together to buy our club and become the largest supporter-owned club in the UK. Since then, our management team has been working to get the club back on track by building the foundation for a sustainable football club - with the collective support of all our fans and not relying on a single rich patron.
Financial stability has been brought to the club and this has meant that we’ve started to create our new training facilities due to be ready later this year.
It’s incredible that as a club we’ve never owned our training facilities and I’m proud to be part of this monumental achievement.
However, despite this progress, we still face some big challenges and we’re hoping you can help us by funding our academy to give Pompey the best chance of success both now and in the future.
On the 20th May, we announced that work had begun on a £500,000 training ground complex at Roko, right in the heart of Portsmouth. The funding for this was sourced through the Presidents, Directors and Supporters Trust with work beginning in April to give the facilities the maximum chance to be ready as close to the new season as possible.
And as you read this, exact replicas of our new Fratton Park pitch (another amazing and long overdue piece of work) are being created at our new training ground.
This will mean that, for the first time, we will have our own dedicated training facilities for both the first team squad and our academy. But that’s just Stage One. One of the key elements to selecting Roko was the ability to expand in the future and we have already secured the option to immediately add an additional two pitches and facilities to the rear of the complex to provide a permanent base for our academy teams.
Does Portsmouth need an academy?
Even in our Premiership days we did not own our training facilities, and we’re currently using local university pitches - which we have to book on a daily basis. This puts us at a massive disadvantage compared to other clubs, and significantly hinders the professional development of all our players, especially our academy prospects.
As with any football club, our academy players are vital and we need to ensure that our academy continues to produce talent of the likes of Darren Anderton, Joel Ward, Asmir Begovic, Gary O’Neil, and Marc Wilson among the many others over the years.
As the product (albeit many years ago now) of an academy myself, and also the former manager of our academy, I cannot emphasise how important academies are to football clubs and the local community - I’m sure you know this already.
It’s my belief that every child growing up supporting Pompey should at least have the opportunity to play for this wonderful club – and without a properly set up academy, this simply isn’t possible.
The best talent is forced to go elsewhere and, while we have always nurtured highly talented youngsters through our system, we believe that we’re failing the community by not having the facilities to provide a complete footballing education.
Not only do academy graduates enhance our team, they also enhance the connection of the club with the community.
Even when they leave, their resale value allows us to reinvest in facilities, players and also other initiatives in the community.
To create this academy we knew we had to embrace the community and continue to work together. Last year when we needed to raise £2.5m to save Portsmouth, fans were asked for an investment of £1,000 for a share in the club. Unfortunately, many fans simply couldn’t afford to help us at that time. Even with subsequent share issues, a large proportion of fans are excluded.
Then when we asked you through our recent survey, what you’d like to see us do next, a resounding number of you told us you wanted the club to run fan funded projects so you could make a difference. We took all this on board and, if this campaign is successful, you will directly shape our future and also help us successfully deliver the largest football fan funding project in the UK.
You can make it happen.
A few years ago, we had a taste of what could be, winning trophies, playing in Europe against AC Milan – things many of us thought would never happen. But as we all know, it came at great cost.
Our vision is to return Portsmouth FC to where we belong, at the top table in English football but to do it the right way, built from a solid foundation of youth players and financial stability with you, the community, right at the heart of everything we do.
The first step on this journey is to develop our academy to attract the best regional talent to come and play for Pompey.
How the money will be spent?
£250,000 is not an insignificant amount of money, but we believe you can help us do it. Every week we fill Fratton Park with 15,000 home fans – and with that many fans contributing the price of a ticket, you’d smash the target. So, we’re calling this our 24th home match of the season.
As part of our commitment to be open about our finances, it’s important that you know how the money you’re donating is going to be spent, so we’ve broken it down for you:
Developing the academy is something for you to be proud of on its own, but that’s not enough. We want to thank you for supporting our cause with some exclusive rewards, each related to what we’re trying to create.
You’re welcome to contribute as much or as little as you want, but every contribution will receive a thank you and your chosen reward. We may even surprise you with some extra special things throughout the campaign. The more we raise, the more amazing and frequent these will be.
